|Mississippi Widening advances in Merrillville|

Merrillville – No longer is the widening of Mississippi Street south of 83rd Avenue a question of need.
Town Leaders see it as a must.
And perhaps as soon as 2007, construction to make Mississippi street a four-lane road south to 101st Avenue might begin.
It will take the OK of the Northwestern Regional Planning Commission to make the project a reality. But the widening of the roadway already exists as part of NIRPC’s 2030 Transit Plan.
The traffic influx on Mississippi Street began in 2000 when the 93rd Avenue bridge was built over Interstate 65, connecting Broadway and Mississippi Street via 93rd. It became a convenient alternate to U.S. 30, which runs parallel to 93rd to the north and is peppered with traffic lights.
Now comes the development of the Ameriplex at the Crossroads business technology park located on the east side of Broadway between 93rd Avenue and 101st Avenue . With it will come even more traffic on Mississippi Street .
